          Hardship Fund for Learners: scholarships and grants


          The New Zealand Government’s Hardship Fund for Learners (HAFL) provides temporary financial assistance to tertiary learners who are facing hardship due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

          The University of Waikato is distributing HAFL funding as an extended programme of scholarships and grants for students enrolling in B Trimester 2020.


          D.V. Bryant Trust University of Waikato Scholarship

          Value: Up to $10,000

          Closing date: Friday 26 June 2020

          For students at any level of study enrolled full-time in B Trimester 2020, who can demonstrate a high level of financial need as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The scholarship will fully fund accommodation in a University of Waikato hall of residence as well as tuition and student levy fees. This scholarship also includes the loan of a Chromebook for the duration of the student’s full-time study.

          University of Waikato Tuition Scholarship

          Value: Between $3,000 and $4,000

          Closing date: Friday 26 June 2020

          For the payment of tuition fees for full-time students studying in B Trimester 2020, where there is a demonstrated financial need as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The student must not have had their fees otherwise paid for by another scholarship or via Fees-Free funding.

          Hardship grant for lockdown expenses

          Value: Up to $1,000

          Students who were studying in A Trimester and are continuing with full-time study in B Trimester may apply for a hardship grant to cover expenses incurred as a result of lockdown in Alert Levels 3 and 4. Funding covers costs such as return travel from a University hall of residence to a home address, and private rental accommodation payments forfeited by the decision to spend lockdown at a different home address.

          International students hardship grant

          International full fee paying students who have been enrolled since 23 March 2020 and who have experienced financial hardship due to the impact of Covid-19 can also apply for a hardship grant. Funding covers costs such as food and rent, and in instances where employment has been impacted.

          Applications for this grant are now closed.

          Eligibility and evidence

          Applications to the University of Waikato Hardship Fund for Learners scholarships and grants must demonstrate financial need and/or loss of income as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Receipts for expenses claimed must be provided. Full information about eligibility and required evidence is available with the application documents for each initiative.

          Further financial support

          Grants for smaller amounts may be available from the Student Hardship Fund administered by the Waikato Students’ Union and funded by the University, alumni, and payroll contributions from University staff to the University Foundation.
